You will see a list of all the relevant spans of text, and clicking on each will select the associated span of text. You can use the Inspector tab to find direct character formatting in your project – set the Inspector mode to Formatting, and check the Direct character formatting option. To see what character formatting is applied, you can look at the bottom of the Styles tab as your cursor moves over the text. This overrides any font specified in the paragraph style. This is the preferred way of doing things, since it’s easy to change later.Ī font can also be specified for a span of text – it’s very common (though not a good idea) to use direct formatting to apply fonts to blocks of text as character formatting. Sometimes it isn’t obvious where the font has been specified, and you may be puzzled about why a certain font (or text size) appears in your book preview.Ī font can be specified in a paragraph style, such as ‘Body Text’. The scaling factor to convert a point size in Jutoh to an em size in HTML can be adjusted in the Options panel in Project Properties, should you wish to tweak the way text size is calculated. Any font above or below 12pt will be sized relative to the default font, using the HTML ‘em’ unit. The reader software, and user, will choose the best size. Keep your main content, apart from headings, footnotes, captions etc., at 12pt – this is the point size that Jutoh regards as the ‘default’ size, and which can therefore be left unspecified in the generated ebook. Directly formatting all your content with fonts is unnecessary, can cause inconsistencies in your book and should be avoided. You can apply fonts directly via the Tools tab of the Formatting Palette or via Format | Character, but it is much better to use named paragraph styles, such as ‘Heading 1’ or ‘Body Text’ and set the font there. Applying fonts in the text editorįonts are available to be applied within Jutoh just as in any other word processor. Somebody (please!) either lengthen that microphone holder or replace it with a hand-held microphone that the speaker can hold up to their own mouth and still maintain a modestly erect posture. It is embarrassing to me just watching from the cheap seats. The point is obvious - the speaker is placed at a disadvantage when addressing the council by being forced into body language of abject supplication. And tall people don’t have a prayer of being heard unless they assume the posture of a retching sop addressing a toilet bowl. Most individuals of moderate height are forced to bend way over to get their mouth close enough to the podium microphone to be heard. And if you think that’s no big deal, go find the olde rhyme about “for the want of a nail the shoe was lost”. It’s that pesky little microphone down at the Public Comment podium in the council chambers that I think could use some serious IT intervention. Though I have only once seen the problem which precipitated this decision, and agree that simply jotting their votes on a slip of paper which is then passed to the City Clerk may be too cheap and simple to contemplate, I’m willing to acquiesce with blowing $5K of our money so that any big city visitors to our council chambers don’t laugh out loud when a vote is taken. Our City Council recently voted to spend $5K for a nifty new council voting contrivance that allows for council members to all vote on an issue just like they do in the big cities with lighted indicators and thorough technological regard to all the legal requirements of secret voting and realtime transparency. Good for her and good for us! If we had more flags there would be more marchers. It was wonderful! ![]() The angle between this gravitational force and the y-axis (which I set as perpendicular to the plane) is the same angle (θ) that the track is inclined. But only a component of the gravitational force accelerates the cart. Since the cart can only accelerate in the direction of the incline, there is only one force that pushes in this direction-the gravitational force. Here is a force diagram for a cart (with no friction) rolling down an inclined plane. If you want to stay I am going to connect the acceleration of the cart to something else-the local gravitational field. If you only care about finding the acceleration, you may be excused. I've gone over this before, so let me just leave you with this older post that goes over some of the details of finding the slope for a linear function.įinding the Slope of the Incline (and Friction) Honestly, this pops up in so many labs and students commonly struggle with this idea. Further, it is important that you find the slope and realize that this slope has some meaning. You should also understand that a linear graph is nice because you can easily estimate a best fit line if you use graph paper (just by using a straight edge). You should make a graph because it's probably the best way to analyze your data. Allain likes graphs"-but that's not true (well, it's true I like graphs). I know students often think "I have to make a graph because Dr. So there are some actual reasons for making a graph. But if you calculate the acceleration without the graph, you are explicitly stating that the y-intercept is zero-which it might not be. This is pretty close to zero, so that's good. Second, what about the y-intercept? In the linear fit above, I get a y-intercept of -0.00399 meters. How do you know your initial model (the kinematic equation) is legitimate if you don't plot your data? You need to see that it sort of fits a linear function. You might get a similar value for the acceleration, but treating each point individually isn't the same as looking at all the data at once. Isn't this the same thing as making a graph? Well, no. For the horizontal axis, we will plot t 2 instead of just time since the distance should be proportional to time squared. So let's compare our expected model with the generic equation for a line.Īs you can see, we will have to plot distance on the vertical axis to make it look like our expected linear function. Second, I want to make a graph that is linear. Yes, I know that this should be on the horizontal axis since it's the independent variable, but the graph will look better this way. First, I am going to put distance on the vertical axis. According to our kinematic equation, distance should be proportional to time squared. In this case, what do we expect? Should this be a linear function? No, our model for the acceleration does not predict that the distance should be proportional to the time. In most cases it is to show that there is a relationship between the variables being plotted on the two axes. We have a graph, but what do we do with it? Why should we ever make a graph? Should we just make a graph because a lab report has to have a graph? No, there is a reason to make a graph. ![]() ![]() ![]() With a history of almost 300 years, the cobbled and oak-lined streets, beautiful parks, and archaic buildings, the host city retains its essence. Just as importantly, it was a thoroughly satisfying close to the story arc that started when the vile Ramsay Bolton rose to power. Battle of the Bastards (season 6, episode 9)Īnother standout episode of the series, Battle of the Bastards was a landmark in Jon’s arduous quest. ![]() Hardhome expertly conveyed an overwhelming sense of dread of things to come, with the eerily quiet ending of the Night King demonstrating his power to Jon cementing that feeling of impending doom. However, an icy hellscape breaks loose when the Night King and his growing army decimate the town and its people in a riveting and gruesome battle. Jon and Tormund Giantsbane, alongside other Night’s Watchmen and Free Folk, journey to the town of Hardhome to convince the others to join them in an alliance. Following the aftermath of the Night’s Watch’s battle with the Free Folk, Jon still manages to sow the seeds for a sturdy united front against the true conflict that would lead to the demise of Westeros. Hardhome stands as one of the most iconic episodes of Game of Thrones, as it was equal parts action spectacle and a major turning point in the series’ overarching threat and storyline. It was another vintage brand of Game of Thrones heartbreak - and a new meta scapegoat for the fandom in the form of Ollie. Seeing Jon at her mercy, yet reluctant to let the arrow loose was painful to watch and even more so when Ollie abruptly murdered her. The Watcher’s on the Wall was the grand climax of the bitterness between the Night’s Watch and the Free Folk, concluded with a chaotic set piece battle at Castle Black.Įmotions were running high as Ygritte was betrayed by someone she loved, even though Jon’s love was just as genuine. ![]() Ygritte was Jon’s first love to meet a cruel fate. Though his unrelenting willpower to serve the greater good is admirable, it’s also one of the catalysts for Jon’s most crushing losses. The Watchers on the Wall (season 4, episode 9) Amid the political turmoil, backstabbing, and a looming supernatural threat of invading ice zombies, this intimate scene and episode were both well-earned and sincere for both characters - which makes the eventual tragedy hurt that much more. Ygritte gets her fill of teasing the uptight and noble-to-a-fault Snow before an intense scene of romantic embrace. At this point in Kissed by Fire, Jon had managed to win the cautionary acceptance of the Free Folk. But before Daenerys Targaryen’s descent into maddening authoritarianism, Jon did manage to capture moments of respite with Ygritte beyond the wall. Jon Snow’s life has been unfortunately been marred with tragedy, including romance. This is all the more rewarding for him, as Jon has already made enemies at Castle Black seeking to stifle his promotion within the Watch, but becoming Commander Mormont’s steward proved to be a momentous contribution to his growth. It’s a triumphant moment in Jon’s life, as he and his dire wolf Ghost heroically kill an invading Wight Walker and save Lord Commander Jeor Mormont in the process. After Jon and Sam return to Castle Black and identify the two bodies they discovered as members of the missing Benjen Stark’s group of rangers, the looming White Walker threat is brought to their doorstep for the first time. While The Pointy End is named after Jon’s advice to Arya as she now looks to escape the viper’s nest that is King’s Landing, the episode was also a milestone story for the former. Likewise, it’s also the beginning of one of the show’s most heartwarming relationships. At the Night’s Watch, a terrified and woefully out-of-place Samwell Tarly struggles to get used to life surrounded by hostiles, but Jon goes out of his way not only to protect but also to try and train Sam so he can eventually fend for himself. However, Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things show the early signs of Jon’s most admirable qualities. These motives come from a place of hurt, as he’s still looked at as a bastard among nobles from Catelyn Stark’s perspective. It’s understandable, at least, given his young age that he has an air of naivety and cockiness about joining the Night’s Watch. ![]() Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things (season 1, episode 4)Īt this point, Jon Snow was already well established to be one of Game of Thrones‘ most likable characters, even with his own faults. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() However, moving between these areas can oftentimes be agonizingly slow, made only slightly better by the character interactions. ![]() Once players land on Edwards Island, a type of beach/national park, they discover the land is split up into a handful of distinct areas, and in each of these areas is a key point for some exploration, exposition, or character development. Pacing is a huge problem for the game, due in large part to the slow walking speed of the characters and the limitations of the over world. See, while Oxenfree has an intriguing concept, its execution is lacking in a few key areas. It's very clear how Oxenfree wants to affect the player, but it doesn't always succeed in that endeavor. Like Gone Home, the mood and atmosphere are meant to obfuscate the headier ideas - in essence what the game is trying to be about. Oxenfree's supernatural elements are a little more compelling and successful, making for an experience that can get the adrenaline pumping, but this is not a horror game. The themes of death and loss are strong within Oxenfree, but oftentimes it feels like those themes get lost in the experience. However, whether or not they will be satisfied is another issue. It’s obviously hard to point out what does and doesn’t work about the story and the storytelling mechanics without giving away key details, but we’ll just say that the game slowly peels back the layers of its mystery and by the end gamers should be surprised. In fact, the game as a whole is fairly simplistic in its interactivity, at least mechanically speaking. It's a cool idea that, while clever, feels underutilized and is a little too simplistic. Along with that, Alex has access to an old school radio that can “tune” into supernatural objects. As Alex, players will venture through the game poking and prodding interactive objects around the game world, and in turn they will uncover more of the story. That being said, what developer Night School Studios has put together is wholly unique in the way it melds the supernatural with a coming-of-age tale. That’s all to say, if you’re looking for something more like Broken Age, Oxenfree will not deliver on the puzzle aspect. This is a game in which players will get to know a handful of teenage characters, as seen through the eyes of our young protagonist Alex, and by the end they will have the genuine sense that these five teens have grown in several ways. It features very few puzzles, no flashy mechanics, and puts its focus solely on story. Oxenfree is an adventure game in every sense of the word. Still, many may consider it a game worth playing, for a few key reasons.įirst it’s important to get a few things out of the way. Because so much has been speculated about the game’s use of the supernatural and the way in which it seeks to meld that with a coming-of-age-tale, it’s almost impossible to come away from Oxenfree wholly satisfied. As perhaps the first anticipated release of 2016, Oxenfree has a lot of weight on its shoulders. ![]() |
